The Whangārei Fireworks Spectacular hosted at Semenoff Stadium last night in collaboration with the Whangarei Lions, saw a tremendous turnout of over 8,200 community members enjoying a night of entertainment, activities, and celebration. As the event approaches its 30th anniversary next year, it continues to bring joy to Whangārei and raise essential funds for local charities and projects.
“We’re really proud to host such a great whānau event alongside the Whangarei Lions,” said Brent Markwick, Chief Executive of Northland Events Centre (2021) Trust. “It’s amazing to think that next year will be the 30th anniversary of an event that has brought so much joy to the community and allowed the Lions to donate thousands back into vital community projects. With last night’s turnout, it’s clear how important these events are to our community. Of course, we couldn’t have done it without the valuable support of Whangarei District Council, Oxford Sports Trust, GJ Gardner Homes, The Hits and The Advocate.”
Thanks also to the ongoing support from Land Search and Rescue, The Whangarei Pistol Club and the Kamo Fire Brigade who work at the event each year.
The event was filled with family-friendly activities, including face painting, sack races, tug of war, bike riding, and more. A lineup of incredible performances by JTB, WADPA, and Taonga o Te Moana, with MC Char from The Hits, kept the crowd engaged, leading up to a breathtaking fireworks display against clear skies.
Foodies were also treated to a diverse selection of offerings from 16 of Whangarei’s favourite food and beverage vendors. Meanwhile, Wasteless, along with dedicated volunteers, helped attendees sort their waste to divert as much as possible from landfill, with the diversion rate to be announced soon.
Terry Ward from the Whangarei Lions Club expressed his gratitude for the community’s turnout and support. “Lions give all their proceeds to local charities,” highlighting recent donations to organisations such as Diabetes Northland, Tangihua Lodge, the Milk Bank at Northland Hospital, Surf Lifesaving, Hospice and initiatives supporting young people.
This event underscores the strength of community spirit in Whangārei, and both Northland Events Centre (2021) Trust and the Whangarei Lions look forward to next year’s milestone celebration.
