Northland Events Centre (2021) Trust Te Pae Taurima O Te Tai Tokerau is delighted to announce Paula Savage as the new Chair of the Trust, following the recent retirement of Nigel Brereton. Brereton, who served as Chair since the Trust’s formation in December 2021, played a pivotal role in guiding Semenoff Stadium’s development as a regional event hub for Northland Te Tai Tokerau. With Paula Savage now at the helm, the Trust remains committed to its vision: “To be the heart of events in Northland Te Tai Tokerau to enhance the well-being of the community”.

Paula brings a wealth of governance experience to the position, having served as the Trust's Deputy Chair since its inception. Her knowledge of the Stadium’s governance and operations is exceptional, being the previous Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee. She also acted as the Interim General Manager before the current Chief Executive's appointment in April/May (temporarily stepping down from the Trust), making her well-versed in the strategic and operational aspects of the organisation.

“We are thrilled to have Paula’s expertise and commitment to guide us forward,” said Brent Markwick, Chief Executive of Northland Events Centre (2021) Trust. “Her deep understanding of our business, combined with her extensive governance experience, will ensure we continue to thrive as a premier venue for our community, showcasing the best of what Northland has to offer.”

Paula’s governance portfolio spans multiple sectors, further enriching her leadership. She currently holds governance roles as a Director and Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee for Pamu the State Owned Enterprise also known as Landcorp Farming Ltd andChair of Mount Wellington Trust Hotels.. Her previous roles include governance positions with Ministry for the Environment, NZ Rugby League, NZ Avocado, Ara Taiohi, Foundation North and NZ Football, as well as leadership positions at Youthtown Inc. and Canoe Racing NZ.

“It has been a pleasure to work alongside Nigel for the last three years and it is a privilege to now be appointed Chair of the Northland Event Centre (2021) Trust Te Pae Taurima O Te Tai Tokerau.  Northland is a vibrant community and Semenoff Stadium is Northland’s premier events venue.  We have an amazing team led by Brent who deliver the mahi and the support of key stakeholders Whangarei District Council and the Semenoff family.  It is nice to be part of something so special.  Together with the other Trustees Hetty Van Hale, Steve Armitage and Andre Hemara we will continue our mission “to host events that embody the heart, spirit and potential of Northland Te Tai Tokerau.”

The Trust extends its sincere gratitude to Nigel Brereton for his commitment in the formative years of Northland Events Centre (2021) Trust, and we wish him all the best as he embarks on his next chapter in Auckland.
